More than 86,000 MINI Cooper models are being recalled for a steering glitch.
The recall covers the 2002-2005 MINI Cooper and Cooper S models as well as the 2005 MINI Cooper and Cooper S convertibles. According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA), the power steering can fail in the affected cars, requiring the driver to steer manually, increasing the potential loss of vehicle control. The automaker is aware of 20 accidents and five injuries related to the defect that affects a total of 86,018 cars.

After receiving 339 complaints, NHTSA began an investigation in 2010. The agency is aware of five crashes and three fires related to the issue. Last year, parent company BMW extended the warranty on the cars to 13 years and 150,000 miles.
Recall notices will be sent to affected owners starting in December and owners will be able to take their vehicles to dealerships to have them inspected and repaired at no cost.
